The Peterborough DALROD Phantoms announce today the signing of Latvian import goaltender Janis Auzins.

Auzins has played for HK Riga of the MHL, an under 21 junior league (equivalent to Canada’s Major Juniors) that feeds to Russia’s KHL (second-best league in the world after the NHL). As a starter in that league he held a .910 save percentage which he maintained the following years in Belarusian, Latvian and Slovakian pro leagues. Over his career so far Janis has played 123 games, finishing last season with a Goals Against Average of 2.48 and a save percentage of 0.91.

On joining the Peterborough DALROD Phantoms Janis said: “I’ve decided to join the Phantoms because I think it will be a great experience. It helps that I have a good friend playing here as well. I’ve been playing in different leagues, which has been great for me and for the next season I’m hoping for more great games. For the team I’m hoping for a great season, and best return from players, to score goals.”

Peterborough DALROD Phantoms Head Coach Slava Koulikov had the following to say on the major signing, “We are very excited to welcome Janis to the Phantoms for this season. He is an extremely talented young goalie that will serve as the backbone of our team. Since turning pro he has proven that he can maintain a top level of performance in the Belarusian top league, which is among the most competitive in Europe. Janis wants to build his name and we expect him to be among the top goalies in the EPL.”

Auzins signing is dependent on receiving an ITC card which is expected to be cleared early in July.
