The DALROD sponsored Peterborough Phantoms, have today announced that Assistant Coach Stevie Johnson has agreed to take up the position of Head Coach for the clubs affiliate team the Peterborough DALROD Islanders for the upcoming season.
Stevie J has been a huge figure within Peterborough Hockey for more than 25 years. Of late he has been a regular figure within the Peterborough DALROD Phantoms Coaching staff as Assistant Coach, but will now turn his attentions to the Farm (feeder) team in Peterborough by acquiring the leading role as Head Coach of the Islanders.
Although the Phantoms have lost Johnson on a week to week basis, it will create great connections between the two teams, and enable a direct transition for developing players through the ranks. With a wealth of knowledge in competitive hockey himself and some impressive statistics from his time with the Peterborough Pirates, the Islanders are in experienced professional hands to improve and develop Peterborough youth, into senior hockey.
Coach Johnson said – “After some structure developments over this summer, I felt that my time would be more beneficial in helping Dave and Jo in their goal to try and bring on our junior system. This would bridge a gap from junior level to Phantoms, and hopefully give the Phantoms local players to draft up and play within the EPL when they are ready. I would like to implement similar systems that the Phantoms use, so the young guns can find it an easier transition to senior hockey.
“It will be a tough year and will take a while for changes to settle, but all the boys in the Islanders have to pay to play, meaning they are determined and want to achieve, so hopefully with fun and hard work we will see results by the end of the year.
“We are in a tough league with Slough Jets, Haringey and Lee Valley being the main teams to beat. It would be great to see some of the Phantoms fans at the games and support this new era in Phantoms hockey”
With under a week to go until the Islanders new site is launched please stay tuned for more announcements coming soon.
