The DALROD sponsored Peterborough Phantoms suffered their first defeat of the 2015/16 campaign on Saturday at the Spectrum in Guildford.
The home side netted twice in the opening few minutes as they caught the Phantoms napping. Swede Marcus Kristofferson scored the first of the night after just 26 seconds of play, and he doubled the home sides lead on 3.11.
Craig Scott claimed his first of the night on 4.51 to halve the deficit, assisted by Darius Pliskauskas and James Ferrara.
Despite both teams having chances, the remaining 15 minutes of the period somehow remained scoreless.
The second period saw another quick goal after the restart.
With Phantoms Lloyd Gibson sitting a Boarding penalty, it was former Phantom Erik Piatak who gave the Flames some breathing space on 23.16 with a powerplay goal past Janis Auzins.
It was Auzins and Guildford Gregg Rockman, also a former Phantom, who ensured the game remained at 3-1, with both netminders having a busy Saturday evening.
The final 20 minutes saw the Phantoms pushing for the goal that would bring them back into the game. With just under 9 minutes of the contest left Will Weldon and Marc Levers combined to split the Flames defence and setup Craig Scott for his, and the Phantoms, second of the evening.
The goal revitalised the Phantoms, but as the clock ran down, and with the advantage of an extra skater for the final 90 seconds after pulling Janis Auzins, they couldn’t find the equaliser and the game ended ins a 3-2 defeat for the Phantoms.
Man of the Match went to Marcus Kristofferson for the Flames, and Tom Norton for the Phantoms.
