The DALROD sponsored Peterborough Phantoms traveled to Humberside on Saturday but couldn’t bring the points back home as they fell to a 5-1 defeat at the hands of the Hull Pirates.
The Phantoms started the stronger of the two sides, with Martins Raitums in the Hull goal being called into action early on, but 3 first period goals, in a 10 minute spell saw the home side take the advantage.
On 5.40 Sam Towner gave the home side the lead with a low shot past Janis Auzins in the Phantoms goal. Nathan Salem doubled the Pirates lead on 9 minutes with a slapshot from the top of the slot that flew into the top corner before Auzins moved.
It was 3-0 on 15 minutes when Tommi Laine, Lee Bonner and Pasi Salonen played Tic-Tac-Toe through the Phantoms defence before planting the puck in the back of the Phantoms net.
An end of period talk by Phantoms Coach Slava Koulikov appeared to have paid dividends when the Phantoms scored their opening goal just 36 seconds after the restart. A melee in front of Raitums goal saw Edgars Bebris scramble the puck over the line to give the Phantoms a slither of hope.
Midway through the period the Pirates made it 4-1 when it was Nathan Salems turn to scramble the puck over the goal line for his second of the night. 5 Minutes later and it was 5-1 when Lee Bonner fired past Auzins. The goal marked the end of Auzins game, as Adam Long replaced him between the pipes.
No goals but plenty of penalties in the final period as tempers started to fray. The Phantoms had the majority of the possession and shots, but Raitums and his defence were standing tall and thwarting the Phantoms at every opportunity.
As the buzzer sounded a numbers of players came face to face, with Hull’s Tom Ralph having to be escorted off the ice and back to the locker room after picking up a 10 minute Unsportsmanlike Misconduct penalty, alongside a Game and Match misconduct.
Man of the Match went to netminder Martins Raitums for the Pirates and Ales Padelek for the Phantoms.
