The Waldeck Peterborough Phantoms battled back from two goals down to defeat the league winning Leeds Knights on penalty shots.
Jordan Marr and Sam Gospel got the starts for their respective teams and dominated the opening exchanges, stopping the few chances that came their way.
Both sides had chances as the period went on, but it remained scoreless as they headed back to the locker room for the first intermission.
Leeds got themselves in front early in the second period when Matt Haywood found the net over the shoulder of Marr.
Marr then held firm to deny the Knights a goal on the breakaway, before Austin Mitchell-King was denied by Gospel on a nice feed y Luke Ferrara.
When Will Weldon was assessed a hooking minor, Leeds capitalised on a 5-on-3 powerplay straight off the draw, as Jordan Buesa put puck to twine.
It looked a tall order for Phantoms as they went into the second break two behind, but it always felt as though the third goal in the game would be absolutely crucial for either side.
It was Phantoms who got it. At 46:06, Mitchell-King capitalised on a rebound after an Ivan Björkly Nordström effort was saved to halve the deficit.
Ferrara then centred for Martins Susters, who saw a spin-o-rama effort well saved, before Finn Bradon showed nice hands at the other end, but sent his shot just wide of Marr’s net.
Phantoms drew level at 49:09 when Callum Buglass jumped into the play and dispatched an effort under Gospel and into the bottom corner.
By this point, Phantoms were flying and created some good openings to snatch the win in regulation. Ales Padelek went closest on a feed by Nordström, but Gospel made a smart stop in close.
The game headed into overtime and both sides looked to control puck possession, whilst also trying to find a way to goal.
Nordström and Padelek were both denied by Gospel on breakaways, as the game headed to a shootout.
