The Peterborough DALROD Phantoms today announce that Lee Elias has joined the coaching staff as the Phantoms Development Coordinator.
Elias, already a familiar face to Phantoms fans for his work on the Phantoms off-ice productions and presentation, will now turn his skills to the Phantoms on-ice as well.
Prior to arriving in the UK, Lee had established a solid background as a player and coach in the American university system, as a player winning the Mid Atlantic Collegiate Hockey association championship with Montclair University in 2003. As a General Manager and Coach at the same school from 2007-09, Elias turned around a team that had slumped to a 5-25 season record to a 20-10 season in his first season. During his tenure the team qualified for back-to-back regional tournaments and eventually a national tournament, all firsts for the program.
In addition to Lee’s collegiate experience, he played junior hockey with the Philadelphia Little Flyers organization and was a prospect with the Huntsville Havoc (SPHL) in addition to being invited to train with select New Jersey Devils (NHL) on ice during the 2005 NHL lockout.
Speaking about his appointment, Elias said: “Primarily I will be responsible for the team building/bonding alongside individual player development. Additionally I will be assisting Slava’s goals as coach and support the team from a hockey standpoint in any way possible”.
He continued: “We’re hoping to create a ‘Team First’ mentality. Players will be asked to emulate that in both practice and games, as well as how they handle themselves off-ice. In terms of training and development, I’m looking for students of the game – players that are willing to put in the extra time needed for them to develop and grow as players”
Lee will continue with his role as Game Operations and Content manager but will be taking a step back from the more public side saying: “We have a lot going on with the media team, however with my new role it would be a conflict of interests for me to be broadcasting information about the team. Our media crew is one of the best in the league and I have full confidence in them moving forward while I operate more behind the scenes”
Speaking on Elias’ appointment, Phantoms Head Coach Slava Koulikov said: “Lee has a lot of passion for ice hockey, but his professional approach is why I’ve brought him on board. He has some good, fresh ideas and will definitely help us to move further in the right direction with our setup”.
Coach Koulikov continued “Lee has already been working with some of our younger players over the summer and will be responsible for our pre-season camp which is important to the foundation of our season. I’ll be working closely with him on player development throughout the season and I’m really looking forward to it”.
