The Peterborough DALROD Phantoms continued their Pre-Season campaign on Saturday with an impressive 5-2 victory over the Milton Keynes Lightning, in the 1st leg of the Ashes.

Despite being an away game for the Phantoms, the game was played at their North Bretton rink, as Lightning are awaiting the completion of the refurbishment of their home.

The game had all the hallmarks of a local derby from the opening puck drop. Less than a minute was on the clock before Phantoms Captain, James Ferrara, and ex-Phantom Lewis Hook found themselves in the penalty box after a coming together, but they were just the warm-up act. A minute later and Phantoms Alan Lack took exception to a hit by Lightnings import Stanislav Lascek and both players dropped the gloves.

Both netminders were kept busy when the action returned, and it was the Phantoms who finally took the lead on 11:59 when James Hutchinson fired past Stephen Wall in the Lightning net. Phantoms then doubled their lead with a nicely taken short-handed goal on 17.14. With Edgars Apelis sitting a Cross-Checking penalty the short-handed Phantoms picked up the puck, and James Hutchinson this time turned provider with a nice pass to Luke Ferrara to make it 2-0 at the first break.

If both teams supporters thought the first period started at a frantic pace, the second was to prove even more so. Just 19 seconds into the middle stanza Phantoms made it a 3-0 game when Will Weldon’s pinpoint pass put Marc Levers clear to turn Wall inside out and score Phantoms second short handed goal of the game.

Having lost all 7 games against Milton Keynes last season, the 3-0 lead was uncharted territory for the Phantoms, but the Lightning weren’t going to go down without a fight, and at 28.27 they started their comeback. Firstly Ross Green found the impressive Blaz Emersic to pull a goal back for the ‘Home’ side.’ Three minutes later it was 3-2 as Stanislav Lascek fired past Janis Auzins in the Phantoms goal.

With just 4 seconds of the period remaining Edgars Bebris pass found James Ferrara who cut across the front of the goal and slotted the puck past Wall to make it 4-2 to Phantoms going into the break.

The final period saw both teams fighting to take an advantage, but both sets of defence were kept busy and it wasn’t until 53.54 that Phantoms Luke Ferrara scored the final goal of the game to give the Visiting Phantoms a 5-2 victory.

Man of the Match went to James Hutchinson for the Phantoms and Blaz Emersic for the Lightning.

The 2nd leg of the Ashes takes place on Sunday 7th September at Planet Ice Peterborough. Face-Off 5.30pm.
