After seeing off the reigning League Champions on Saturday night, the DALROD sponsored Peterborough Phantoms hosted the reigning Play-off Champions on Sunday.
The Basingstoke Bison were the visitors, but after Phantoms defeated Manchester Phoenix by 5-4 on Saturday they fell to a 5-2 defeat on Sunday.
After a goaless opening Period the second period saw 6 goals and the Bison peppering Janis Auzins in the Phantoms goal with a 21-7 shot advantage.
Basingstoke opened the scoring when Ciaran Long netted on a Bison Powerplay. The visitors advantage lasted just 19 seconds thanks to Edgars Bebris, but a second Ciaran Long goal followed by a deflected Aaron Connolly drive saw the Bison take control. Phantoms fans thought their team were hard done by for the Connolly goal as the homeside had Jason Buckman sitting an Interference call for a big mid-ice hit on Luke Reynolds of the Bison which many thought was a clean hit.
Phantoms fought back with Darius Pliskauskas netting a second goal for the PHantoms, but once again the Bison took a 2 goal advantage vefore the period break thanks to an Andy Melachrino breakaway goal.
Phantoms rallied in the 3rd but Dean Skinns in the Basingstoke goal stopping everything that was fired at him, and if he missed it the post came to the visitors rescue.
With the clock running down, Phantoms pulled their netminder for the numerical advantage, but couldn;t keep possession and Melachrino punished the home side with a late Empty Net goal.
Man of the Match went to Dean Skinns for the Bison, and Alan Lack for the Phantoms.
Phantoms did use the game to blood two new Phantoms. Martins Susters from the Nottingham Juniors and Mason Webster from the NIHL’s Haringey both made their Phantoms debuts with a view to a long term contract with the club.
