The DALROD sponsored Peterborough Phantoms re-claimed the top spot in the English Premier League on Thursday evening with a 3-2 Overtime victory in Bracknell.
It wasn’t all plain sailing for the Phantoms, who despite having a win streak against the Bees going back 2 years, and the Bees losing a number of players recently, were made to work for the victory.
A goal late in the opening period for Bees Carl Thompson set the tone for the game that would see the Phantoms chasing the Bees all night.
Darius Pliskauskas levelled for the Phantoms 2 minutes into the middle period after some nice work from Rob Ferrara and Tom Norton set the Lithuanian free to fire past Alex Mettam in the Bees goal.
The Bees regained the lead just 22 seconds into the final period. With Phantoms were seeing out a Darius Pliskauskas Netminder Interference penalty from the end of the 2nd period, the Bees Powerplay unit found young Ivan Antonov who made it a 2-1 game.
The Phantoms stepped up their game, looking for the points they knew they needed to keep them at the top of the table. The equaliser came on 50 minutes when Tom Norton fed the puck to Craig Scott who made no mistakes in firing the puck into the Bees goal.
Despite the momentum swing, the Phantoms couldn’t find a winner in the regulation 60 minutes, and the game went to Overtime. Phantoms overtime record may not be good this season, but their 3rd period dominance would push them to claim a rare overtime win. With just 22 seconds of the overtime period gone, Craig Scott gave the puck to Eddie Bebris on the blueline, and his rocket of a shot flew through the Bees defence and past Mettam to give the Phantoms the extra point.
Man of the Match went to Carl Thompson for the Bees and Craig Scott for the Phantoms.
The two teams do battle again on Saturday, when the Bees travel to Peterborough for a 7pm face-off.
