A late powerplay goal gave the DALROD sponsored Peterborough Phantoms the victory against the table topping Basingstoke Bison on Saturday night.
Tom Nortons winner leaves the Phantoms sitting 4 points behind the Bison but with a game in hand against their rivals.
The game was just 29 seconds old when the Bison took the lead. Their opening attack saw Aaron Connolly feed the puck to Stuart Mogg who found a way past Jabis Auzins in the Phamtoms goal.
Bison held the leas until 21.29 when the Phantoms finally managed to beat Jon Baston in the Bison goal. Lloyd Gibson teamed up with Darius Pliskauskas for the Lithaunian to net the Phantoms opener.
The period saw both teams looking to ascert their supremacy, but both coming up against resolute defending and top class netminders.
Bison regained their lead on 25 minutes thanks to Aaron Connolly but were once again pinned back by the Phantoms on 25.11 thanks to a solo Will Weldon effort.
Phantoms lost influential forward Craig Scott for the start of the final period, after he was on the wrong end of a 10 minute misconduct call late in the middle period, when complaining about Robbie Ferrara’s Holding penalty.
With the game looking to be heading to overtime, it was turned on it’s head in the final 5 minutes. On 55 minutes former Phantom Declan Balmer was adjudged a slashing penalty. From the resulting Powerplay the Phantoms scored their 3rd of the night as Darius Pliskauskas sent Tom Norton clear on the stretch pass to beast Baston on 56.26.
A Phantoms timeout to clam things down, was followed by a Bison timeout and then Baston being pulled for the extra skater. Despite the man advantage the Bison failed to find a way through the Phantoms defence and as the buzzer sounded it was the Phantoms who claimed the points and the advantage in the league title battle.
Man of the Match went to Stuart Mogg for the Bison and Tom Norton for the Phantoms.
