The EPL Cup Final, 1st Leg, saw the Guildford Flames claim the advantage going into Thursdays 2nd leg in Peterborough after the Phantoms fell to a 9-1 defeat in Surrey on Wednesday.
Early skirmishes in the opening period saw Milan Baranyk and Darius Pliskauskas both force good saves out of Flames netminder Richard Ullberg, whilst at the other end Marcus Kristofferson and Jans Eriksson were keeping Janis Auzins busy in the Phantoms goal.
The opening goal came after 7 minutes when Kristofferson fired the home team into the lead. Despite several chances for both sides, the goal proved to be the only one of the opening 20 minutes.
The Phantoms came out the stronger team in the second period but two early quick goals soon had them on the ropes. Jez Lundin netted on 23 minutes before Kristofferon netted his second of the night 3 minutes later. The Flames 3rd goal signaled a Phantoms Timeout, as Head Coach Slava Koulikov looked to re-focus his team.
Janis Ozoline made it 4-0 on 27 minutes before picking up a penalty just 10 seconds after scoring. The Phantoms moved the puck around on the powerplay but couldn’t convert their chances to goals. As the period clock ran down, Flames scored their 5th of the night thanks to Ben Campbell.
With 20 seconds of the middle period remaining Jens Eriksson and Will Weldon had a coming together and both received 2 minute minors for roughing.
A further early goal at the start of the period added to the Phantoms woes when Jans Eriksson scored on the 1st attack after returning to the ice to make it 6-0.
Phantoms kept pushing forward as the Flames sat back on their lead, hitting the Phantoms on the breakaway where possible. On 49 minutes Eriksson scored his second, and Flames 7th goal of the night.
Phantoms did finally find a way past Ullberg a minute later as the Phantoms powerplay unit was rewarded with a goal for Marc Levers.
Janis Ozolins scored his second of the night on 54 minutes before Tom Duggan rounded off the scoring on 58 minutes to make the final scoreline Guildford Flames 9-1 Peterborough Phantoms.
Man of the Match awards went to Marcus Kristofferson for the Flames and Lloyd Gibson for the Phantoms
