This coming weekend will see the Ice Hockey teams from Cambridge University and Oxford University battle it out in the annual Varsity games.

This year it’s the turn of Cambridge to host the games, and for the final time they will be held at Planet Ice here in Peterborough.

On Saturday 4th March the oldest rivalry in the history will see the Cambridge Light Blues take on arch-rivals the Oxford Dark Blues in what is expected to be the biggest indoor fixture of the Oxbridge sporting calendar, and one of the biggest varsity fixtures on ice outside of North America.

This year’s edition will mark the 132nd anniversary of the Varsity Match between the two teams. The Peterborough rink is once again expected to reach capacity as crowds cheer on two of the top teams from Division 1 of the British Universities Ice Hockey Association as they go toe-to-toe and battle it out for the historic King Edward Cup.

The game follows the Peterborough Islanders game, with the Islanders looking to claim the NIHL League title on Saturday.

Doors open at 8pm for the Varsity game with face-off at 8.30pm. Phantoms fans can also obtain tickets for the Varsity game at 50% discount.

On Sunday 5th March it’s two games for the price of one when the Womens teams battle it out for the honours, followed by the Universities “B Teams”.

Whilst the Oxford Women Dark Blues have claimed the trophy for the past 3 years, Cambridge are looking to end their bitter rivals winning streak on Sunday.

Under Head Coach Ian Offers Cambridge Women are unbeaten this year and have just won their league title winning all 6 of their games. They also won their two pre-season challenge games against Nottingham and Sheffield, and are now looking to add the scalp of Oxford to their unbeaten season.

The Womens game follows the PhanForce Skate with a Phantom social event, and the team are hoping some of the Phantoms fans and their drums will be in attendance.

Doors open at 7.30pm with the puck drop at 8pm. Phantoms fans can also obtain 50% off tickets for Sundays games.

If that wasn’t enough, the Cambridge Eskimos will take on the Oxford Vikings at 10pm on the Sunday night in the final Varsity battle of the weekend.

The Light Blues would love to see Phantoms fans who aren’t travelling to Hull on Saturday, or are missing Ice Hockey on Sunday to come to their games, and have set up a special promotional code which gives fans 50% off ticket priced (down to £5 entry) and kids get in free. To take advantage, use the code GO_PHANTOMS when purchasing tickets on-line or on the door. When purchasing on-line, click the green Tickets button, and you can enter the promotional code at the top of the page.
