The Peterborough DALROD Phantoms Yesterday took advantage of the Summer Solstice, and what better way to enjoy the great outdoors and elements our fine countryside has to offer, than playing 72 holes of golf all in aid of charity.

Team DALROD, took to the fairways at 4am on Thursday 21st June, on the exhausting but very rewarding MacMillan Longest Golf Day Challenge. As we all laid in our beds on a silent and peaceful Thursday morning, four gentleman; DALROD Peterborough Phantoms NIHL2 Head Coach Stevie Johnson, Phantoms 1 & 2 Netminder Dan Lane and Dave & Jo Lane and Peterborough DALROD Phantom Netminder Euan King and Assistant Coach Jason Buckman parked up their vehicles in a very empty and quiet Elton Furze Golf Course.

As the sun started to come up, the gentleman started their quest at 4am and ended it 16 hours later. The temperature was perfect, the wind was low and with a nice refreshing spray from the sprinklers, they were off to a great start. As the tempo picked up and the first round was over, the guys went straight from the 18th into the 1st, to go for round two! By the end of this round, fatigue started to kick in and the hunger pangs took over, it was time for a break.

Forty minutes later and they were back out on round 3, the conditions had changed the sun was shining and the wind had picked up. The guys hit the hardest point in the day, but they trudged on with high spirits and was full of humour. Again, they continued straight from hole 18, into the 1st for the last and final 18 holes.

As their backs were seizing up, they hobbled on sore feet and grappled with cramp,  the courageous four embarked on their final few holes. The sun started to set over the picturesque setting of Elton Furze Golf Club it made for a beautiful evening of golf (if they hadn’t  had 3 previous rounds of golf).

Stevie, Dan, Euan and Jason finally came to the last hole, where golfing etiquette went out of the window, with all 4 golfers teeing off together.  With the end in sight, they rushed towards the greens of the 18th hole with an audience of family members and club members that had come out from the club house to watch them finish. As the final ball went into the hole their was an en-rapture of applause from all those watching on.

We would like to thank Elton Furze Golf Club for their fantastic hospitality, especially their members and Captains for helping in the day and applauding the guys as they came in, to everyone who has generously donated, Dave and Jo Lane Directors of DALROD for supporting the day and of course to the four golfers Stevie, Dan, Euan and Jason. Well done to the four of you, we will see you there next year!
