Peterborough Phantoms 5-2 Basingstoke Bison
A hat-trick from man of the match Ales Padelek was enough to see the Phantoms claim their second win of the weekend against the Basingstoke Bison. The Czech import made it 4 goals from two games over the weekend and collected the man of the match award on both nights.
Corey McEwen had the best chance of the first period when his hard work saw the Bison turn over the puck, but the eventual shot was well saved by former Bracknell Bees goalie, Alex Mettam.
Bison had one good chance of their own when Nathan Long turned the puck over in his own zone, but Jordan Marr was on hand to keep the puck out of the Phantoms net.
Phantoms took the lead through Padelek, who capitalised on a well-worked powerplay, by firing the puck into the top corner from the blue line.
Harry Ferguson then found the net to double the Phantoms advantage on his home debut; placing the puck in the bottom corner after good work behind the goal from Petr Stepanek.
Padelek made it three just short of the halfway mark, taking an assist from McEwen to double his tally for the evening.
The Bison got on the board after 45 minutes when player/coach Ashley Tait found a way past Marr on the powerplay, with captain James Ferrara sitting a tripping minor.
But the Phantoms regained their three-goal lead just over a minute later, when the impressive Padelek took matters into his own hands, before firing past Mettam and sealing his hat-trick.
Then, with Scott Robson sitting a tripping minor, the Bison struck again through former Hull Pirate Tom Ralph, who found the net of his former teammate, Marr, to reduce the arrears.
But Phantoms struck back almost immediately once again when Glenn Billing finished off a flowing move which saw Ferguson and Tom Norton picking up the assists.
The scoring was over at that point, but the action certainly wasn’t. Tom Norton took exception to a poor hit from Morris and dropped the gloves with the Scottish forward.
In the same incident, Bison defenceman Ralph dropped the gloves with Nathan Pollard, which saw all four men sitting penalties.
Will Weldon took a clipping penalty with thirty seconds remaining, but the Phantoms held on for a comfortable three-goal victory in their final pre-season game, ahead of next week’s opening weekend – home and away against the Telford Tigers!
