Peterborough Phantoms 2-3 London Raiders
The Peterborough DALROD Phantoms suffered heartbreak in the last second of overtime, in their opening league game of the season. Former Basingstoke Bison forward, Aaron Connolly, netted the Raiders’ winning tally at 64:59.
The first half chance fell to Phantoms’ Nathan Pollard, who exchanged passes with James White before entering the zone and going to the backhand, but he could only find the side netting with his effort.
The Raiders then grew into the game and were presented with a 5 on 3 power play, when Tom Norton and Petr Stepanek were both called. But despite a number of Dan Scott slap shots, the Phantoms killed the penalties and returned to full strength.
The energetic White then carved out a decent opportunity to put the Phantoms ahead, but it was well saved by Michael Gray.
The Raiders took the lead after 14 minutes when JJ Pitchley found a way past Jordan Marr to send the Essex side into the period break with a one-goal lead.
The Phantoms continued to outshoot the Raiders in the second period, but couldn’t beat Gray, who stood tall for his side from start to finish.
Scott Robson and Petr Stepanek went closest for the Phantoms in the second stanza, but the score remained the same as we headed into the third period.
It took the Phantoms just under five minutes of the third period to draw level, when Corey McEwen found time and space in the Raiders zone, before firing the puck into the bottom corner.
And the Phantoms took the lead with just over ten minutes remaining. McEwen again with the hard work, but this time it was James Ferrara who was on hand to apply the finishing touch, tucking the rebound into the back of the net.
The Raiders were presented with another 5 on 3 opportunity late in the game and pulled their goalie to make it 6 on 3. Within 4 seconds of the puck being dropped, they levelled through import forward, Juraj Huska.
The game headed into overtime, where both sides had, and didn’t capitalise on power play opportunities. It looked as though the game was heading to penalty shots when Connolly found himself free in front of Marr, to claim the extra point for the visitors in controversial circumstances.
The Phantoms claimed the buzzer had already sounded before Connolly lifted his third attempt into the net after a fine double save by Marr, but Matthews said goal and the Raiders returned to Essex with the two points.
The Phantoms have an immediate chance to get back to winning ways tonight in Milton Keynes, when they take on the MK Thunder for the first time this season. You can find match updates across our various social media channels from 6:45pm!
