Peterborough Phantoms 1-2 Sheffield Steeldogs

The Peterborough Phantoms suffered their first defeat in this years Autumn Cup on Saturday night, at the hands of the Sheffield Steeldogs. Former Phantom, Nathan Salem, notched a goal and an assist for his new side, and took the man of the match award back to Yorkshire.

The Phantoms were presented with the games first chance, when Petr Stepanek and James White combined and found Tom Norton in space, but his shot was straight into the body of Dogs goalie, Dimitri Zimozdra.

But the visitors took the lead with just over four minutes played, when Salem beat Jordan Marr to score against his former team.

White then went inches away from levelling the scores, as his wrist shot flew narrowly over the crossbar.

Stepanek and White combined again as the game reached the ten minute mark, this time setting up Will Weldon, who couldn’t find the net with his effort.

The second period was filled with penalties, but no goals. The best chances fell to Salem and Ash Calvert for the visitors, but the game was still finely poised going into the third period.

It took just over two minutes of the third period for the Phantoms to find the back of the net. Czech forward Stepanek found the time and space in the zone before firing the puck into the bottom corner of Zimozdra’s net.

Marr was then called back into action, this time keeping Calvert’s redirected effort out, as the game approached the final ten minutes.

The Phantoms were given a powerplay opportunity when Milan Kolena sat two minutes for charging. But the Steeldogs capitalised on a 2 on 1 breakaway, when Salem found Duncan Speirs, and the latter made no mistake from close range.

The Phantoms attempts to mount a comeback were in vein, and the Dogs held on to a narrow away win.
