Peterborough Phantoms 2-1 Hull Pirates (After penalty shots)
The Peterborough Phantoms secured their qualification from their Autumn Cup group with a dramatic penalty shots win against the Hull Pirates. It was most definitely a night for the goalies, with Jordan Marr and Tomas Fucik picking up the man of the match awards.
The first half chance fell to the Phantoms when Scott Robson’s blue line effort was redirected by Nathan Pollard, but Fucik was equal to the effort.
The Pirates best chance of the period came with just over four minutes of the 20 to play when they hit the post before Marr claimed the rebound.
The Phantoms continued to put up more shots than the visitors in the second period but were struggling to find a way past the Pirates’ import netminder. Corey McEwen took a set up from Petr Stepanek, but couldn’t find the back of the net.
The Pirates then cleared a shot off the line, before taking the lead themselves. Jordan Fisher opened the scoring and left the Phantoms with work to do.
Then, with Bobby Chamberlain sitting a late hitting penalty, Tom Norton jumped in on the attack to tuck home a clever assist from Will Weldon, setting up a tense third period in the process.
The Phantoms had the better of the second half of the second period, with Pollard, Ales Padelek and James Ferrara going close, but it remained 1-1 as the game entered the third period.
Both sides traded chances in the third, but the goalies stood firm and the game headed to overtime.
With 63:02 on the clock, the Pirates took a bench minor for too many men on the ice, leaving the Phantoms with a 4 on 3 power play for the remainder of overtime.
Padelek went close before Stepanek forced Fucik into another fine stop with 1 second to play, but the game was to be decided by penalty shots.
Stepanek and former Phantom James Archer both saw their shots saved in the first round of penalties.
Phantoms then took the lead with McEwen firing past Fucik, before Chamberlain narrowly missed for the visitors.
Matty Davies stepped up for the decisive penalty, and missed, which saw the Phantoms claim the extra point!
