Peterborough Phantoms 4-3 Swindon Wildcats
The Peterborough Phantoms will travel to Swindon for the second leg with a one-goal advantage, following a narrow first-leg win on home ice. It was a night to remember for returning Phantom Martins Susters, who notched the game-winning goal on his second debut for the team.
Phantoms had the first major chance, with Corey McEwen and Susters going close to finding the back of the net, only to be denied by Renny Marr in the Swindon goal.
But it was the Wildcats who took the lead with 5:38 on the clock. With James White sitting a tripping penalty, Sam Jones fired home on the power play.
The visitors lead was doubled after 11 minutes when Toms Rutkis chipped a shot past Jordan Marr for an unassisted goal.
The Phantoms were then provided with a two-minute 5on3 powerplay when Max Birbraer and Aaron Nell took penalties with 13:15 on the clock. Tom Norton was the man to capitalise on the chance, smashing a blue line effort past R.Marr, and into the back of the net.
Glenn Billing tied the scores as the game approached the halfway mark when he took a pass from James Ferrara and fired the puck into the goal via the back of R.Marr’s pads.
Moments later, the Phantoms carved out a chance to take the lead, when Susters found Petr Stepanek, and Stepanek put McEwen in on a breakaway, but the shot was well saved by R.Marr.
And the Phantoms did eventually take the lead, when Norton collected his second goal of the game with a slap shot, after good work behind the net from McEwen.
Susters collected his goal in the final minute of the second period, smashing home a rebound after McEwen’s shot was saved.
The third period was a cagey affair, and Nell pulled a goal back for his side on the power play, with just over 47 minutes played.
Swindon applied pressure as the game reached it’s conclusion, but the Phantoms held on to the win and will take a goal advantage to Wiltshire in next weeks second leg.
