Peterborough Phantoms 4-3 Sheffield Steeldogs (Aggregate: Phantoms 6-5 Steeldogs)
The Peterborough Phantoms won the Autumn Cup with a hard-fought victory over the Sheffield Steeldogs. Tom Norton was the hero for the Phantoms, adding to goals from Will Weldon, Petr Stepanek and Glenn Billing, to claim the Autumn Cup trophy.
After the 2-2 draw in Sheffield, both sides knew a win on the night would win them the trophy, and neither side gave an inch in the opening period. It ended as it began, at 0-0.
Stepanek, Martins Susters and Ales Padelek all had good chances in the opening frame, but Dimitri Zimozdra stood tall in the Dogs goal, to keep the scores at zero.
But it was the Steeldogs who took the lead early in the second period with a shorthanded goal from Cam Brownley. The Dogs forward skated down the left wing and cut inside, before backhanding his shot past Jordan Marr.
Their lead was short-lived, however. The Phantoms levelled when Nathan Pollard found Weldon, and Weldon found the back of the Steeldogs’ net.
The Dogs retook the lead through Duncan Speirs, who took a pass from Andy Hirst and fired a shot which left Marr with no chance.
But the Phantoms fought straight back once more through Stepanek, who found room in the Dogs’ zone and fired a laser past Zimozdra, and into the back of the net.
And the Phantoms took the lead for the first time in the game at 26:58, after good work from James Ferrara and Padelek, who found Billing in close, and he made no mistake with his finish.
The Dogs’ equaliser came at 36:29, when Brownley’s wayward shot took a wicked deflection off Phantoms defenceman Scott Robson, and ended up in the back of the net.
The game was finely poised going into the third period, with both teams knowing one goal could win them the cup.
Zimozdra continued to stand on his head for the Steeldogs, saving from Stepanek, Susters and J.Ferrara in the opening exchanges of the final frame.
But at 48:10, the cup winning moment came for the Phantoms. Norton jumped in on the attack and fired a cannon past the helpless Steeldogs goalie, and sent the noisy Phantoms supporters into raptures!
The Phantoms held on to their one-goal advantage for the remaining 11 minutes, and were crowned the 2018/19 Autumn Cup Champions!!
