We spoke to Phantoms’ latest record breaking forward, Cam Hough, to get his reaction to claiming the league scoring record and look ahead to the forthcoming playoff campaign.

In Sunday night’s 8-3 win over the Milton Keynes Lightning, Cam fired home his 62nd goal of the season, surpassing the league’s single season scoring record, previously held by Leeds Knights forward Kieran Brown.

Planet Ice Peterborough erupted when the puck hit the net and the scenes which followed were heartwarming, as Cam enjoyed the celebrations with his team, including a big goalie hug from Hayden Lavigne.

“It was an amazing feeling! To get that goal at home in front of all our fans was very heartwarming and surreal experience. I couldn’t have done it without my teammates, wife’s and family’s support. It was a very cool experience to be able to celebrate it with them.” Cam said.

The league record target wasn’t something that Cam was targeting initially, but when it became a possibility, it was something he was gunning for - completing with two games to spare.

“At the start of the season I put a target out for myself to beat my goal total from last year (54). When I did reach that goal, I started to realise maybe the league regular season goal record was within reach. I’m happy I was able to reach both of those targets.” Cam said.

2025/26 has been a season of change for the Wendy’s Peterborough Phantoms, with Ashley Tait embarking on his first season at the helm. But despite various hurdles and consistent injuries throughout the lineup, the team have performed well.

Cam said: “Once again, it has been another great year with the Phantoms. Definitely a lot of ups & downs trying to stay healthy & manage fatigue throughout the season. Overall, I think we have got on very well with the situations we’ve had to deal with. I’m very proud of this group for the way we’ve battled through everything and not given up even when things were looking tough. Even with a short bench we’ve had guys step up to fill those gaps and I think that’s what Peterborough hockey is built on and why there have been many trophies that have come from this programme.”

The 2025/26 playoffs are right around the corner and the Phantoms will know their opponents following the conclusion of this weekends’ games. Cam is optimistic about the Phantoms’ chances in the playoffs, having experience them for the first time last season, where the team fell at the final hurdle in Coventry.

“Hopefully we can get some of the injured guys back as we’ve been struggling for numbers the last couple months. I have a lot of faith in this group whether we have a full roster or not. We’ve shown we can get the job done against anyone with any line up. Once you get to Coventry anything can happen, it’s only one game winner moves on so we just have to make sure we show up every day here for the next month.” Cam said.

And when asked if last season’s final defeat gives the team more motivation to go one further this season, Cam said: “Yes, of course it does. It was a tough way to end the season after how far we had come. I don’t think anyone wants to feel that way again, so hopefully it bring’s that extra spark to push us over the line this year and bring that trophy home.”

This season, Phantoms fans have been breaking club attendance records and bringing the noise to spur the team on even in its most difficult moments. Cam was keen to express his gratitude to the fans, who have brought so much energy to the team with their numbers and noise.

“The fans have been unbelievable this season once again! Noise, attendance, posters, drums, jerseys, you name it. It’s an unbelievable environment for us players to play in and I’m sure an unpleasant one for other teams. I can really feel the energy not only within myself but within the team on the bench. The fans support plays a vital role in our games.”

“Keep bringing the energy until the very end. We are more than thankful for everything you all do. We hope you have enjoyed this season as much as we have!”

“See you all in playoffs soon!” Cam concluded.
