The Wendy’s Peterborough Phantoms kickstarted their weekend with another excellent home win as they defeated the Hull Seahawks.
A Luke Ferrara brace, joined by goals from Jasper Foster and Cam Hough, secured the Phantoms’ win, on a night Callum Buglass celebrated his 300th league appearance for the Club.
The away side thought they’d taken the lead when Johnny Corneil batted the puck out of the air and into the net, but the goal was disallowed for a high stick.
And the Seahawks went off celebrating again moments later in bizarre fashion after Owen Sobchak’s shot looked to be dealt with by Hayden Lavigne. Their celebrations were cut short again, with the referees confirming a goal hadn’t been scored.
But their time to celebrate did eventually come at 14:37, when Ethan Hehir followed up to score the rebound on a Beau Reader effort.
Phantoms drew level in the final minute of the first period, when Ferrara shot through the five hole of Jordan McLaughlin to send the sides in all square.
The game had the end-to-end nature we’ve come to expect of games between the Phantoms and the Seahawks, but the next goal didn’t come until 32:17, when Lee Bonner ripped an effort past Lavigne to put the Seahawks ahead again.
But the Phantoms wouldn’t go away and it was Jasper Foster who levelled the scores once more, shooting high into the far corner from the blue line. McLaughlin got a piece, but not enough, as it flew into his net.
As the third period began, you began to wonder if we were all set for another overtime period, with two sides battling away in a well contested encounter.
But Ferrara gave Phantoms their first lead of the night at 47:40, blasting home from the left circle on an assist by Janne Laakkonen.
Cam Hough put daylight between the sides in the closing stages when he prodded home a rebound on a Dillon Lawrence slapshot on the powerplay.
The Seahawks pulled the goalie and were rewarded with 51 seconds left when Corneil tapped in a rebound, but Phantoms stood firm in the closing minute to secure both points.
