The Wendy’s Peterborough Phantoms were on the wrong end of a late comeback from the Leeds Knights, which resulted in an overtime winner for the visitors.

The Knights got ahead early when the puck popped out to Edgars Vengis just outside the Knights offensive zone, allowing the young forward to gain the zone and rip short side past Hayden Lavigne.

But it didn’t take long for the Phantoms to draw level, as Louie Kynaston pounced on a rebound out in front after Callum Buglass’ shot was saved, to notch his second of the weekend.

And a minute and a half later, Phantoms hit the front. This time, Cam Hough got in down the left and fired from the circle, collected the loose puck on the rebound, took it behind the net and played it out in front for the onrushing Luke Ferrara to sweep past Sam Gospel.

The Knights hit back at 12:48 on the powerplay, as Vengis popped up in front of goal to lift his second of the evening into the roof of the net.

The first period was busy for scoring, but the second was the opposite. Both sides playing solid defence, limiting their opposition mostly to chances from up high.

Phantoms did go close when Jasper Foster gained the zone and ripped a good effort on net, which was dropped by Gospel, but fell just wide of the post.

Barni Sari had the first good chance of the third period when Tom Norton sprung him in with a stretch pass, but Gospel was equal to the effort.

The next goal did come at 44:23, with the Phantoms on the poweprlay. Phantoms won the draw and Luke Ferrara went point-to-point to Ralfs Circenis, who blasted an unstoppable one timer into the back of the net.

And they went two ahead when Hough popped up on the back door to tap home after good work from Ferrara and Janne Laakkonen.

But Phantoms ran into penalty trouble in the closing moments and the Knights hit back with two and a half minutes to play - Fin Bradon converting from in close after another feed from behind goal.

And they levelled the scores with 58:36 on the clock as Sam Dunn shot through traffic to send the game to overtime.

It took the visitors just 15 seconds of overtime to take the second point, as Liam Peyton ghosted in and lifted his shot beyond Lavigne for a powerplay goal.
