It was a hard-fought point for the Wendy’s Peterborough Phantoms in Hull, as a third-period fight back took the Seahawks to overtime.
An early high sticks penalty for Owen Sobchak saw Cam Hough return to the bench for repairs - elevating the call to a double minor. With the Phantoms struggling to build momentum, the powerplay was cut short halfway through - with Morgan Clarke-Pizzo sitting for a hook.
With the play at 4x4, it was the Seahawks who struck first through Declan Jones at 02:51 - with both teams returning to full strength shortly thereafter.
The Phantoms’ top line was cycling the puck well; both Laakkonen and Ferrara saw chances well saved by Jordan McLaughlin. This momentum was once again hampered by a penalty, this time a bench minor for too many men at 05:50.
With the bench minor killed, the Phantoms pressed for an equaliser. The pressure finally paid dividends at 11:11 - with Brad Bowering tipping in a Corey McEwen threaded pass at the back post, following good work from Janne Laakkonen in the build-up.
Johnny Corneil looked to end the period on a high for the Seahawks - breaking away at pace, but Lavigne had other ideas - getting his pads down well to keep the score tied at one.
An early chance for Janne Laakkonen on the backhand opened the second period - but it was the Seahawks who struck first. Young defenceman Noah Kääriäinen wound up from the blue line and fired top shelf at 23:08 - putting the Seahawks ahead.
A breakaway opportunity for Svec forced two good saves out of Lavigne, before Corneil dodged a Robson sliding block and tested the Phantoms goaltender again - with Lavigne continuing to stand tall.
An extended powerplay followed for the Phantoms - with Owen Bruton sitting for high sticks on Luke Ferrara at 32:51 - before Josh Hodgkinson and Jason Hewitt earned simultaneous penalties for tripping and hooking respectively.
The Phantoms took this opportunity with both hands - with Cam Hough firing home a Ferrara set-up pass at 36:18, following more good work by Laakkonen in the offensive zone.
The Seahawks, once again, looked to end the period ahead - but a slapshot from Hewitt was into the glove of Lavigne after some good tracking from the Phantoms goaltender.
It was the Phantoms who started the final period of regulation the brightest - with captain Luke Ferrara seeing two efforts denied by McLaughlin.
The Seahawks struck first, however, with Bobby Chamberlain converting a scrappy effort at the back post - following a scrum in front of Lavigne at 44:56.
Laakkonen looked to bring the scores level, catching McLaughlin out of his crease and winning possession. A drop pass almost fell for Hough to convert into an empty net - but was just ahead of his stick.
The Seahawks stretched the advantage to two for the first time in the game - with Jordan Stallard converting a Caly Robertson pass at 49:39. The Phantoms answered quickly - with a Ralfs Circenis effort beating McLaughlin from the hashmarks just 20 seconds later.
With the wind in the Phantoms’ sails, Hough was the next to break away. A determined effort saw him beat multiple challenges and dodge a Hehir check before plating a pass for Luke Ferrara. The Phantoms' captain was tripped on receipt of the puck, sending Caly Robertson to the box - and the Phantoms back to the power play - at 55:19.
Coach Tait’s subsequent timeout looked to motivate the Phantoms to an equaliser on the powerplay - but with the penalty killed, Lavigne headed to the bench for an extra skater with a little over a minute remaining.
The extra man proved useful for the Phantoms this time, with Corey McEwen firing home with 47 seconds on the clock, extending his birthday celebrations.
It was a sub-optimal start to overtime for the Phantoms - with the Seahawks believing they’d scored less than a minute into the extra period.
Lavigne had run into his goal, dislodging the net - much to the displeasure of the Seahawks. The officials washed the goal and brought the play back to a faceoff.
A Cam Hough breakaway proved to be the most promising chance in overtime - with the Canadian looking sure to score as he bore down on McLaughlin, but the puck dragged just wide.
The matchwinner came from Jordy Stallard, who converted a Johnny Corneil set-up play at 61:13, gaining the extra point for the Seahawks.
