The SLS Peterborough Phantoms are delighted to announce the signing of 20-year-old defenceman, Henry Newell, on a two-way agreement with the Nottingham Panthers.
The highly sought after defenceman joins the Phantoms after beginning his career in the Nottingham and Sheffield junior systems, before heading to North America to continue his development in Canada and the USA.
In 2021/22, he represented the CIHA Voyageurs U17 Prep, before playing AAA with the Voyageurs’ U18 side. After winning the most points for a defenceman award in 2022/23 (10 points in 14 games), he became an alternate captain in 2023/24 for the Voyageurs U18 Prep.
He then headed Stateside when he joined the Vernal Oilers in the USPHL Premier - where he and his side won the championship, with Newell collecting six goals and 25 assists for 31 points in 39 games.
Last season saw him return to Europe to play in the Swedish U20 league with Kalix HC. He continued his impressive points haul in Sweden, adding two goals and 13 assists for 15 points in 20 games from defence.
He was a man in demand ahead of a return to England, with multiple NIHL National clubs in for his services - but he becomes the latest new addition to the SLS Peterborough Phantoms, on a two-way agreement with the Nottingham Panthers!
“I’m delighted to be signing for the Phantoms and can't wait to get started. This will be my first club in England since returning from playing abroad. Having played in Canada, the USA and Sweden, I've had some great experiences, but I'm really looking forward to being back and embracing a new challenge. As soon as I spoke with the club, it felt like a great place to be. I'm excited to meet the fans, get to know the lads, and give everything I have to help the team have a successful season.” Henry said.
And Phantoms’ Head Coach, Ashley Tait, said: “Getting Henry is great for us. We weren’t the only interested party and he’s definitely keen to get established with us and in the league.”
Welcome to Phantoms, #4 Henry Newell!
