The Wendy’s Peterborough Phantoms are happy to announce the re-signing of utility man, Joe Gretton, for the 2025/26 season.

The 27-year-old from Nottingham began his career in his hometown, progressing through the junior ranks at the Motorpoint Arena, before making his first venture into senior hockey with the Nottingham Lions.

After spending part of the 2017/18 season with the Northumberland Stars in the GMHL in Canada, he returned to the Lions and was named as one of their assistant captains for the 2018/19 season.

He first arrived in Peterborough ahead of the 2019/20 season, initially on a two-way with the Phantoms NIHL2 side. But after a debut goal in a big scoring friendly win over the Milton Keynes Thunder, and a string of solid performances, he featured predominantly for the senior Phantoms side that season.

Gretton quickly became a fan favourite in Peterborough for his style of play and willingness to drop the gloves when needed, which resulted in some memorable tilts most notably against another former Phantom, Mason Webster.

He’s remained with the Phantoms ever since his arrival and has been an invaluable part of the roster across his 200+ appearances for the club, regularly featuring as a forward and a defenceman, further showing his willingness to do whatever his team needed him to do.

Upon signing in Peterborough, he said he just wanted to find a bit of the love he’d lost for hockey after some difficult seasons with the Nottingham Lions, and it’s safe to say he’s achieved that and more during his time at the club so far.

And now, one of the biggest personalities in the NIHL National returns to Planet Ice Peterborough for a sixth season in Phantoms colours!

Joe was thrilled to seal his return to the side for another year: “I’m dead excited to be back for year six in paradise, I love this team and our beautiful fans so it’s always an easy decision to come back. We have unfinished business from last season and I’m looking forward to seeing all the boys old and new and getting started again. See you all in September!”

Phantoms’ new Head Coach, Ashley Tait, said the following on Gretton’s return to the roster: “I’ve always been on the other team with Joe but from what I’ve seen he is a team first guy always gives 100%. Talking to other players he is great in the room, and gives me options being able to play forward and D. What he brings on and off the ice can’t be overlooked.”
